Strike Alert: Ghana's University Staff Take a Stand

Faith Fiawoyife writes,

The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) has announced a total nationwide strike, starting on Monday, September 16, 2024. This decision comes after the government failed to meet their demands for improved working conditions.

The association has been negotiating with the government for some time, seeking new rates for Vehicle Maintenance and related allowances. However, the government has yet to respond positively to their demands.

In addition to the Vehicle Maintenance allowances, the SSA-UoG is also seeking the release of Tier Two pension deductions to Fund Managers since January 2024. This issue has been ongoing for several months, with no resolution in sight.

Furthermore, the association is demanding the recalculation of interest on Tier Two pension funds from 2010 to 2016. This issue has been pending for years, and the SSA-UoG is determined to get a resolution.

The strike will affect all member campuses across the country, causing disruptions to university activities. The SSA-UoG leadership hopes that the strike will push the government to act on their grievances and honor previous commitments to improve their working conditions.

The SSA-UoG has tried to negotiate with the government, but all efforts have been unsuccessful. The association feels that a strike is the only option left to get the government's attention.

The strike is a last resort, and the SSA-UoG is willing to negotiate with the government to find a resolution. However, the government must be willing to listen to their demands and take action.

The SSA-UoG is determined to fight for their rights and improve their working conditions. The strike will continue until the government meets their demands.

The impact of the strike will be felt across the country, with students and staff affected. However, the SSA-UoG believes that the strike is necessary to bring attention to their grievances.

In conclusion, the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana has declared a total nationwide strike, starting on Monday, September 16, 2024. The strike is a result of the government's failure to meet their demands for improved working conditions. The SSA-UoG is determined to fight for their rights and improve their working conditions, and the strike will continue until the government meets their demands.
